The festival is an initiative started by the Caribbean Harpists Civil Association, which was founded back in 2007 in the city of Cancun. The festival's goal is to promote the musical culture of the harp, its different types, currents and interpreters. The first International Harp Festival, known as "Arpafest", was held in May 2008 as a way to put Cancun on the map where more than 100 international festivals are held, such as in Europe, Asia, Oceania and America.
Harp Artists such as Nicolas Caballero, Celso Duarte, Martin Portillo, Mario Barradas, Ruben Vasquez and Julio Gonzalez, as well as the ensemble Tlalix-tak and the Los Jarochos Group of the Rosas Brothers, were all part of the 2008 festival. It was a first edition that brought together international harpists who performed specialized clinics and workshops as well as free concerts in various forums: Cafe Andrade, Plaza Kukulcan, Galeria Amarte in Playa Maroma and Parque de las Palapas.
In 2015 and 2016, the Caribbean Harpists Civil Association made an alliance with the company known as Producciones Arteum and the organization Multiple Scenarios in order to increase the scope of the festival. By doing so it included the participation of harpers from Ireland, Italy, England, Japan, Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, Peru and Brazil.
This year's Arpafest will present 4 days of great concerts as well as the special participation of the Camara de Cancun, who will accompany the great masters of Paraguay, Venezuela and Mexico. You will also have a special night dedicated to women with a "Night of the Harp Divas Concert" in which Italy, Colombia, Japan, Paraguay and Mexico will participate.
